The name
When Shlomo HaMelech built the Beit HaMikdash, no iron tool could touch its stones. The work was done by the shamir, a creature our sages count among the ten things created at twilight before the first Shabbat (Pirkei Avot 5:6). It cut the hardest stone cleanly, silently, leaving nothing behind but perfect shapes (Gittin 68a).
